Illinois Carbon Emissions Would Double Without Its 11 Nuclear Reactors
March 13, 2014—Illinois’ 11 nuclear reactors helped the state prevent more than 92 million tons of increased carbon dioxide emissions in 2012, a new report finds.
The study by Illinois Clean Energy Coalition found that if the 96.4 million megawatt-hours of electricity generated by nuclear energy were replaced, based on the current mix of electricity generation sources, “CO2 production from fuel use would increase by more than 40 percent, and CO2 from electricity generation would nearly double.”
The report concludes that nuclear energy in Illinois is “a major factor in limiting greenhouse gas emissions” and that its replacement with other sources would have “enormous environmental repercussions.”
The study cites 2012 U.S. Energy Information Agency data to note that the 80.8 million megawatt-hours of electricity generated from coal in Illinois resulted in 97.1 million tons of carbon dioxide, while the 11.2 million megawatt-hours of natural gas generation emitted 3.5 million tons of CO2.
The report concludes that replacing the 96.4 million megawatts of nuclear energy-derived electricity generated in 2012 with coal and natural gas would result in “92 million tons of increased CO2 emissions” during the year, the equivalent of “all the CO2 emissions from every passenger car registered in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa, combined.”
The report also notes that the state’s nuclear fleet “displaces twenty times more CO2” than wind power does. “To equal the CO2 displacement of Illinois’ nuclear power fleet, the number of wind turbines across the state would need to increase from the current 2,200 to over 27,000,” a physical impossibility given population and topographical constraints.
“It is important for the residents of Illinois and policymakers to know the positive environmental impacts of our nuclear fleet,” coalition Executive Director Doug O’Brien said in a press release. “These data show clearly that we cannot make real progress in reducing air emissions and maintaining abundant supply if we don’t support our nuclear industry.”
